چکیده

This paper is a continuation of the study of surprise as a base for constructing qualitative calculi for representing and reasoning about uncertain knowledge. Here, we further elaborate on κ, a qualitative ranking function which we developed in (Ibrahim, Tawfik, and Ngom 2009b) and which constructs qualitative ranks for events by obtaining the order of magnitude abstraction of the degree of surprise associated with them. Having formulated surprise propagation rules via order of magnitude conditional operators, we commit this paper to show some of the properties that κ possesses which make it an improvement on κ, the ranking function capturing the order of magnitude of probability. Introduction and Overview of the κ

A Surprise-based Qualitative Calculus

This paper introduces a qualitative ranking function that uses signed integers to describe the surprise associated with the occurrence of events. The measure introduced, κ, is based on the κ calculus but differs from it in that its semantics enable an explicit representation of complements. As a result, the κ is more capable of enforcing probability theory-like constraints to carry on reasoning.

Extending the Qualitative Trajectory Calculus Based on the Concept of Accessibility of Moving Objects in the Paths

Qualitative spatial representation and reasoning are among the important capabilities in intelligent geospatial information system development. Although a large contribution to the study of moving objects has been attributed to the quantitative use and analysis of data, such calculations are ineffective when there is little inaccurate data on position and geometry or when explicitly explaining ...

Fractional Probability Measure and Its Properties

Based on recent studies by Guy Jumarie [1] which defines probability density of fractional order and fractional moments by using fractional calculus (fractional derivatives and fractional integration), this study expands the concept of probability density of fractional order by defining the fractional probability measure, which leads to a fractional probability theory parallel to the classical ...

A Logic for Reasoning about Qualitative Probability

We offer extended completeness theorem for probabilistic logic that combines higher-order probabilities (nesting of probability operators) and the qualitative probability operator.

An Experimental Comparison of Numerical and Qualitative Probabilistic Reasoning

Qualitative and infinitesimal probability schemes are consistent with the axioms of probability theory, but avoid the need for precise numerical probabilities. Using qualitative probabilities could substantially reduce the effort for knowledge engineering and improve the robustness of results. We examine experimentally how well infinitesimal probabilities (the kappa-calculus of Goldszmidt and P...
